Every journalist knows that the way we give and get news is drastically changing - if not, then you're not a very good journalist. We are moving more and more online, and after attending the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications' Multimedia Workshop today, I see how much I don't know.
Although the day was a paid event for Florida professionals, I was able to sit in on a couple sessions throughout the day and learn. The information I learned from the Writing for the Web session by Chip Scanlan and the Blog Writing session by Mindy McAdams is more valuable to me than my college courses, especially now as I am about to head into the real working world.
Some things I learned:
- Online headlines are different from print headlines, in the sense that they have to grab readers in a different way. Online, the reader sees headlines, then has to click to read the article. In print, the articles are always below the headlines.
- Breaking news online requires knowing how to write bulletins, updates, headlines, subheads, etc.
- We're going hand-held with our news - cell phones.
- Most blogs, both personal and professional, are never touched by editors. Newspaper trust their bloggers to professional journalists.
- I need to be on Google Reader.
- I need to create a blog.
Now, here I am, creator of a blog and master of the digital revolution.
So, what's the subject of my blog?
We'll get there... Don't push it!
